ATM Machines
There are ATM machines available in Akumal at the Super Chomak grocery store and El Pueblito grocery store (both located just before the arch at the entrance to Akumal). The next nearest ATM is at Bahia Principe/Doña Isabel shopping mall about a mile south of Akumal off the highway.  ATM's are also in many locations in Playa del Carmen and Tulum at banks and grocery stores. ATM's usually provide funds in Mexican Pesos at the bank's daily exchange rate. Usage fees can be high, so check with your bank before you leave to see if they have an affiliation with a bank in Mexico.

Babysitting Services
Babysitting services are available through Akumal Kids! and Tulum Kids! They offer in-room or in-villa babysitters and short term nannies in most locations in the Akumal area between Puerto Aventuras and Tulum.  Rates are from US $7/hour with group and longer term rates available. If you have preschool-age children and are looking for a unique educational experience and/or Spanish immersion in an authentic Montessori environment, enroll them for a few days (or weeks) in the Centro Comunitario Otoch Paal Montessori school in the pueblo of Akumal. PlayaWell/Dr. Michael Lande
Dr. Michael Lande of PlayaWell is a U.S. trained and certified chiropractor working in Playa del Carmen. The PlayaWell office is located in the Yoga By the Way building on Calle 26th between 5th and 10th Avenues. Specialties include gentle full body adjustments, guidance for athletes, and tender care for pregnancy, newborns, and children. Churches
Akumal Pueblo is home to one Catholic Church which offers a mass in Spanish each Monday at 5:00 p.m.

The Catholic Church of Chemuyil on the main pueblo road has services every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Capilla Católica Catholic Church just inside the Puerto Aventuras tourist complex normally has worship services on Saturday evenings. Check with the Puerto Aventuras tourist office for more information at 984.109.5556 or email info@puertoaventuras.com.mx.

The Chabad Lubavitch Jewish Center in Playa del Carmen on the corner of Avenida 10 and Calle 6 (entrance on Avenida 10) has services at 9:00 a.m. on Sundays. The Rabbi Mendel Goldberg can be reached at 984.876.5571, or you can reach him via the website or Facebook page.

The Lighthouse Church of Tulum is an English speaking non-denominational church that has services on Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m. Located on Highway #307, 1.2 miles south of the San Francisco de Asis grocery store. A casual church with lots of music and inspiration, Lighthouse Church serves a free continental breakfast at 9:30 a.m. before services. Contact them at 984.120.4169 or on their website.

The Fellowship of the Riviera Maya Church in Paamul hosts a non-denominational English service every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in the community center. The pueblo of Puerto Aventuras has a Roman Catholic church with masses in Spanish Mondays through Sundays at 7:00 p.m. The office of Sta. Teresita del nino Jesus y la Santa Paz Catholic Church is open from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and the staff only speak Spanish. Reach the office at 984.206.6245.

There is an English-speaking Jehovah's Witness group that meets on Fridays at 7:00 p.m. and Sundays at 1:00 p.m. Located on Venus Oriente between Orión and Beta Sur in downtown Tulum.

Currency Exchange
Currency Exchanges or "Casa de Cambio" are available in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Akumal and Tulum. In Akumal, the Casa de Cambio is located in the Travel Services of Akumal building, near the Original Akumal Dive Shop. Hours are 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. daily. Dive Shops (SCUBA, Snorkeling and Fishing)
Akumal Dive Shop is Akumal's long standing favorite with over 35 years experience on the beaches of Akumal Bay. A 5-Star PADI Facility, Akumal Dive Shop offers daily ocean diving, night dives, cave and cavern programs, "Robinson Crusoe" boat tours, and scuba diving classes. Sign up one day prior for dives if possible. Located on Akumal Bay, near the CEA (north end). Open Daily at 8:00 a.m. Credit Cards Accepted.

Akumal Dive Center on Akumal Bay offers personalized service, daily diving, night dives, equipment and sea kayak rental. Located on the beach of Akumal Bay just south of the Lol Ha Restaurant. Open Daily at 8:00 a.m. Credit Cards accepted. Blue Photo Akumal is located in the Akumal Dive Center and offers professional photography services for diving and snorkeling, as well as underwater camera rental. Service includes editing services which enhance the clarity of the underwater pictures. They also rent dry bags for snorkeling with your own digital camera. Open Monday to Saturday 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Akumal Dive Adventures offers snorkeling trips, daily reef diving, instruction, cavern diving and personalized service. Located next to La Buena Vida on Half Moon Bay. Open Daily 8:30 a.m. Credit Cards accepted.

Dive with Natalie and Ivan A local couple offering personalized guided diving and courses for divers of all levels of experience. Both Natalie and Ivan are PADI Master Scuba Instructors.

Golf Cart and Bicycle Rental
Akumal Guide inside the Hotel Akumal Caribe reception area has two and four passenger golf carts and bicycles available for rent. For more information and reservations (recommended) please email Nayeli or visit their website.
The Akumal Guide office is open from 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Monday through Sunday and the phone number is 984.875.9251.  

Travel Services of Akumal (TSA) in Akumal offers bicycle and golf cart rentals for daily or weekly use. To make a reservation contact them at 984.875.9030 or email them at reservations@akumaltravel.com.

Bikes are also available for rent at the Vista del Mar office/lobby on Half Moon Bay next to La Buena Vida; the lobby is open 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. daily. Stop in for more information, email reservations@akumalinfo.com, or call 888.425.8625.

You can rent bicycles for only $5 per day in the lobby of La Iguana Condos on the northern end of Half Moon Bay. Stop in the lobby or email them at iguana4akumal@sbcglobal.net for more information.

Groceries and Supplies
If you would like your villa or condo stocked with groceries prior to arrival, please email Gessica at Riviera Maya Groceries. It is so great to have the beer cold when you arrive!

Super Chomak is located just at the entry to Akumal. A large selection of imported products, plus liquor, beer and wine. Swim wear, sandals and other things you might find you need and don't have. Open 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily. No liquor sales after 3:00 p.m. on Sundays. Credit Cards Accepted.

El Pueblito Located across from Super Chomak, just next to the Mulgrew Lavanderia. Good selection, better priced in many cases. Open 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily. No liquor sales after 3:00 p.m. on Sundays. Credit Cards Accepted.

We recommend purchasing the bulk of your groceries and supplies in Playa del Carmen at any of the major retailers there. Please check our Grocery Page for a comprehensive listing of stores.

Health and Fitness
Yoga Akumal offers yoga classes daily and intensive weekend workshops monthly. Group and private sessions available.
Morning and evening Classes are offered; Click Here for Current Class Schedule.  Classes are located above the Las Casitas reception office (the stairs are located to the rear of the building).

Organic Yoga is a bed and breakfast and yoga retreat north of Akumal in the jungle. You don't have to be a guest to take part in the classes; email Leon or call him at 984.117.1968 for more information.

Yoga by the Sea is located at the Kool Beach Club in Playa del Carmen. Enjoy yoga overlooking the incredible Caribbean Sea from a spacious terrace. Contact Arielle by email or call her at 984.876.2653 for more information.

The MG Fitness Center in the Omni Hotel in Puerto Aventuras (15 minutes north of Akumal) is another option. They offer a monthly membership of 690 pesos (about $60 U.S.) for use of the gym and many of the hotel facilities between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. daily; if you are only planning to use the gym in the afternoons, the membership is 299 pesos per month (about $25 U.S.) from 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. daily. Internet and WiFi Hot Spots
Many of the rental condos and homes in the Akumal area now offer WiFi to their guests. Sadly, internet cafes on the beach side of Akumal seem to have a short life span. You can find WiFi hot spots at several restaurants and bars in the Akumal area, including: Cafe Te Latte on the beach of Akumal Bay next to the Akumal Dive Center, Lol Ha Restaurant and Snack Bar, Turtle Bay Bakery in Plaza Ukana, La Buena Vida on the beach of Half Moon Bay, La Lunita Restaurant on Half Moon Bay in the Hacienda de la Tortuga condominiums, and Gynn'Ak Restaurant and Cafe across the road from Villas Flamingo.

In Akumal pueblo there is a Papeleria/Video Club store with computers and internet access; it is located on the second block of the main road of the pueblo, across from the cancha on the right side of the street. Also in the pueblo are Tequilaville Restaurant and X'Mirna's Cafe Town. Tequilaville not only offers free WiFi, but also free phone calls to the U.S. and Canada for customers. Tequilaville is located on the right hand side of the main street on your way up the hill, and X'Mirna's Cafe Town is across the street on the corner.

Laundry Services
Mulgrew Lavanderia offers same day service if laundry is dropped off by 8:00 a.m. They charge a set price per kilo for wash, dry and fold. Located next to Mini Super El Pueblito (near the Basketball court and across from the Super Chomak). Open 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. & 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Does not accept credit cards.

There are several laundromats/lavanderias in the pueblo of Akumal as well. Prices are generally less expensive on the other side of the highway, but the service may not be as fast.

Medical Services and Pharmacy
Dr. Nestor Mendoza Gutierrez has opened a brand new 24-hour medical center complete with pharmacy in the Akumal Pueblo.  It has an emergency room, 2 sleep-in observation rooms with private bathrooms, a consulting room, and a pharmacy.  He will also be adding an x-ray and ultrasound facility. The Medical Center is manned 24 hours a day by a team of doctors, and there will also be weekly clinics with a pediatrician and gynecologist.  The Medical Center and pharmacy are located on the main street in the pueblo one block past the police station.  Please call 984.875.9090/9393 for the Medical Center, 984.806.4616 to speak with a doctor, or 984.876.2250 for an ambulance.  You can also contact Dr. Nestor by email: dr_nestor_akumal@yahoo.com.mx.

Also in Playa del Carmen is Dr. Alonso Ignacio Vaquero Schulte. Dr. Vaquero is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from Puerto Morelos to Tulum and is bilingual Spanish/English. Email him at dr_vaquero@prodigy.net.mx or call 984.113.4662.

If you are in need of a pediatrician, Dr. Daniel Bueno at Hospiten in Playa del Carmen is highly recommended. Reach Dr. Bueno at 984.130.9296.

Another recommended pediatrician is Dra. Beatriz and her husband who run the pediatric clinic and emergency center at Playa Med on the Federal Highway 307 and Calle 28 on the west side of the highway.  They are well known and respected doctors and can be reached by phone at 984.879.3114.

There are several hospitals in Playa del Carmen, including the Playa del Carmen Hyperbaric Chamber and Clinic that offers services for diving related injuries in Playa del Carmen. One of the newest hospitals in the area is Hospiten on the south end of Playa del Carmen. A full service hospital with state-of-the-art equipment, Hospiten is located on the east side of Federal Highway 307 across from the Centro Maya Shopping Mall and just north of Playacar. CostaMed is a small hospital facility located just off the highway in south Playa del Carmen. CostaMed accepts credit cards and walk-in appointments, and is located in the Edificio Progreso building on the Federal Highway 307 between 23rd and 27th Sur. In the unfortunate situation that you are in need of urgent medical care and/or emergency transportation back to the United States, there are a few companies who can help with this.

A company called Angel Med Flight operates a worldwide air ambulance and has a legal team and patient advocates to work with insurance companies. Their toll free number is 877.264.3570 and you can reach them at 480.634.8017 internationally. You can also reach them via email or on their Facebook page.

The Binational Emergency Medical Care Committee (BEMCC) was founded in 1976 as a means of rescuing severely injured and medical emergency Americans traveling in Mexico and evacuating them back to the United States for emergency medical care. They will help get you out of Mexico (Cancun) as fast as possible, sometimes within hours, if you have a serious medical emergency while on vacation. You pay an annual membership donation of $45. Pharmacy Services are available in Akumal as well as Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cancun. For the most product availability and best prices we recommend the Soriana or Chedraui pharmacies in Playa del Carmen or Cancun. Inside the Super Chedraui mall in Puerto Aventuras is a Farmacias Similares that has a consulting doctor on-site, a great selection of generic drugs, and a 25% discount on Mondays.
In Akumal, the pharmacy is located across the highway in Akumal Pueblo, at the medical center 1 block past the police station.

Special Needs Services

The first beach for the physically disabled in all of Mexico is now in Playa del Carmen!  This public beach, funded by the local government of Playa del Carmen along with other government social service agencies of Mexico, is located in front of Parque Fundadores near the ferry dock for Cozumel.This visionary project offers shade, showers, drinking water, assistance and special amphibious apparatus for those who require additional help to enjoy the beach and the Caribbean ocean. The wide shower area is designed to give extra room to maneuver equipment or space for attendants if needed and there is a long, stable boardwalk for easy access for those in wheelchairs, or who use crutches or a cane to walk. Equipment available for rent includes crutches, wheelchairs, amphibious wheelchairs, scooters, bathroom accessories, oxygen tanks, hospital beds, and even baby items!
