In Maya, Akumal means "place of the turtles." Easy and contented, this small little beach community is located 75 miles south of Cancun, Mexico, along Mexico's Caribbean Coast. It is a welcoming and friendly place and a cherished secret for those who have been visiting for years.
Akumal is centrally located along the Riviera Maya and makes an excellent base for exploring the many archaeological sites and other attractions in the area. Home to the timeless Maya and blessed with the turquoise sea, bright sky and emerald green jungles, Akumal offers endless opportunities for discovery and adventure. Snorkeling and scuba diving are a part of the daily routine in Akumal. Akumal's bays are populated with brightly colored tropical fish, sea turtles and other marine life.
So much to see and do ... but what Akumal is really all about is relaxing, spending time with family, making new friends, and letting the warm sunlight and blue water soothe you. Our community life is centered around Akumal Bay. Here you will find " the town" which is home to many of the local restaurants, boutiques, the bakery and yoga classes. Akumal is an eclectic community with much to offer.
Akumal has two main beaches: Akumal Bay and Half Moon Bay.
Akumal Bay is the closest and easiest to access from the entrance off the highway. There is ample parking available and the charge to park varies from 50-100 pesos per day. Akumal Bay beach has two dive shops with snorkel gear available for rent, and is the best place to snorkel with the sea turtles. Lol-Ha Snack Bar is a great place to have lunch right on the beach, and there is also a coffee and ice cream shop for your sweet tooth.
Half Moon Bay is the next bay north of Akumal Bay and is a great spot for snorkeling and walking along the beautiful curve of sand. The entry is a bit rocky, so it is not the best place for swimmers and water shoes are recommended for snorkeling. La Buena Vida is a great choice for a delicious meal overlooking the bay and it also has a beautiful oceanfront swimming pool for the kids. A little further along the bay, you will find La Lunita restuarant for fine dinning with gorgeous views. Half Moon Bay is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the authentic Akumal lifestyle.
