A note from The Original Akumal Dive Shop ...![]()

It has been a great
year of news and exciting diving at the Akumal Dive Shop. This year
alone has brought new, unique and exciting diving experiences to the
Mexican Caribbean, all within our reach. The first was at the beginning
of the year with the new discovery of the feeding grounds of the bill
fish (Sailfish, and Blue and White Marlin) at the northeast tip of the
Yucatan Peninsula. Divers from that area discovered that every year
during the late winter/ fall and early spring hundreds of sailfish and
marlin swirl around huge schools of bonito fish and organize themselves
in a feeding frenzy that lasts a couple of months.
There has been also
the sudden apparition of the beautiful yet feared Lionfish all over the
Mexican Caribbean. Here in Akumal, viewing one or more of these fish is
now a daily event in our scheduled dives.
Here in our bay, the turtles keep increasing in number and the schools of "silversider" fish have made their appearance again. Big barracuda, huge groupers and snappers hang around for a good while, as well. You can see these beautifull animals with our snorkel tour.
This year has also
brought some nice changes to the Akumal Dive Shop structure, beginning
with the addition of our new Director of Operations, Alvaro Almada. A
PADI instructor, a world experienced diver and dive shop administrator,
Alvaro holds an impressive back ground coming from The Red Sea where he
worked as director of diving operations for several years, now returns
to his home land and becomes another great asset to the Akumal Dive
Shop. We welcome Alvaro!
Like every year there has been some coming and goings of excellent professional diving instructors and dive masters who stayed for awhile bringing enthusiasm and fresh smiles, we thank and say farewell to Leon Marti, Alvaro Roldan and James Brown and welcome instructors Priya Talwar and Rahel Wicker. As always our smiling "chicas" at the front desk, sales and reception, Betty Viviani and Olga Lingard are here and forever present to great you in your next visit. Another great addition to our staff is Roberto Toca, webmaster designer and marketing whiz who got us going in the amazing world of "Facebook." Yes folks you can find us now in Facebook! And twitter! So, check it out some time and become friends of the Akumal Dive Shop Facebook, Twitter & Youtube New era! Here you can get to know all the staff
