Ground Transportation

Buses and taxis are readily available in Playa del Carmen and Tulum, but can be more scarce in Akumal and other smaller communities. You should have a rental car if you will be staying in South Akumal, Soliman Bay or Tankah Bay.

Public transport. There are lots of different public transportation options in the area. For more information please see our information on getting around the Riviera Maya.

Private transport can be a great option depending on your accommodations. Also, it works very well if you have staggered arrival times or dates within your group. If renting a car is not in your plans, or if you have an extra trip to the airport you would like covered, there are a few great options available. USA Transfers is another good company for airport transfers, operating all along the coast.  They have both cars and minivans for different group sizes.

Always be sure to have a printed confirmation voucher clearly stating the time and date of your service, the number of people in your group and the price you are to pay the driver. It is generally the custom to tip your driver if you happy with your service.

When booking airport transfers, please give the transportation company your arriving flight number, and ask for meeting point instructions in the off chance that you do not immediately see your driver after clearing customs. Most agencies will provide an emergency contact or cell phone number.

Akumal Transfer If you are staying in the Akumal area and need a ride to the airport, then there is a shuttle service leaving from in front of the money exchange building in Akumal at 8am on monday, wednesday, and saturday.  It costs US$21 per person.  Please visit their website to book, or pop in and arrange your transportation at the TSA office.
