There are many great information sources related to Playa del Carmen on the web. Here are some of our favorites:
Playa del Carmen is a bustling city, located south of Cancun, just under an hours drive. (30 minutes from the Airport). Playa del Carmen or "Playa" as it is known by the locals, is a young international city with residents from all around the world. Many Swiss, Italian, German and Cuba nationals have made Playa del Carmen their homes. This combined with rich Mexican culture, Mayan heritage and a tropical vibe, make Playa an eclectic and vibrant city.
The tourist area of Playa del Carmen runs from 5th Avenue, known as "Quinta Avenida" to the beach. Quinta Avenida is great for souvenir shopping. Playa del Carmen is filled with restaurants, bars and dance clubs. Live music can be found here almost any night of the week, making it great for a night on the town. The beach here is very nice, long stretches of white sand. The area nearest the ferry docks is usually very busy, with dive and snorkeling tours and fishing charters easily available. As you walk north or south from the ferry terminal the crowds lessen.
From the Playa del Carmen ferry terminal you can catch a ferry to Cozumel for spectacular wall diving. Ferries run frequently during business hours making it easy to get over and back for a day of diving or exploring the island.
Playa is also a great resource for groceries and other supplies. For visitors to Akumal and points south, we recommend you stop in Playa del Carmen on the way from the airport for groceries. There are also many banks, money exchanges and pharmacies.
