GETTING AROUND AKUMAL
The best way to get around the village of Akumal during your Riviera Maya vacation is on foot (the entire village is only about 2kms long and has one road), or if you don't fancy walking, bicycle or golf cart are other great options. Bikes and golf carts are available to rent from Nayeli's little pink gift shop at the archway.
GETTING AROUND THE RIVIERA MAYA
AIRPORT TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION
There are several options for transportation from the Cancun airport.
CAR RENTAL AND TIPS FOR DRIVING IN MEXICO
Driving around the Riviera Maya is generally very easy. The main access route is the 2-lane Highway 307 (the Carretera Federal) which runs north to south parallel to the Caribbean Coast from Cancun all the way down to the Belize border. Almost all of the towns in the Riviera Maya are located directly off this highway so it is really easy to find everything.
Public Transportation options in the Riviera Maya include Taxis, Colectivos, and Buses. Colectivos or Combis are the white minivans (10-14 passengers) with red lettering that transport locals and tourists from Tulum to Playa Del Carmen and are an inexpensive and adventurous way to travel. You can catch a ride anywhere along Highway 307, just wave or use a flashlight at night to flag them down. When it stops, get in and tell the driver where you want to go and ask the price to your destination.
LIMO SERVICES AND VANS
Within Akumal, the Akumal Guide group is available to arrange for special services, such as limousine and helicopter services. They also can arrange for group transport and day trips. The Akumal Dive Shop also includes a full service money exchange.
There are two ferry companies running regular service from Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. Both companies have ticket booths and boarding at the ferry dock one block south of Juarez where it meets the beach. Please check out their websites for time tables and pricing. ULTRAMAR and MEXICO WATER JETS
