1. AIRPORT TRANSFER

There are several options for transportation from the Cancun airport. Private transport van or a rental car are the most popular depending on your destination. If renting a car is not in your plans, or if you have an extra trip to the airport you would like covered, we‘ll be happy to help you arrange private and secure transportation from the airport to your rental property.

2. CAR RENTAL

We always recommend renting a car while visiting the Riviera Maya. There are many little roads to travel and places to explore, most of which is best done with a rental car and comfortable shoes. We can help you arrange the rental with delivery and pick up at your rental.

INSURANCE INFORMATION
When shopping for car rentals the following information on insurance may help. Insurance is broken down into different categories. The required insurance is the "Additional Liability Insurance" also known as the ALI. We recommend the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection (TP) also. It is preferable that you purchase these through the rental company, they are however often available through major credit cards. Please check with your credit card company for availability and details. The trick to renting a car in Mexico is understanding the need for liability insurance. While often listed as "optional" liability insurance is a must have when driving in Mexico. Additionally, many car rental companies will place a large "hold" on your credit card should you choose not to purchase their insurance. (Often in the neighbourhood of $2,000 US). The cost of liability insurance is seldom included in the daily or weekly rental rate quoted online and is generally only disclosed in very fine print.  It is important to have proof of insurance on hand in case of an accident or dispute. This will save you both and time and money.

3. AROUND AKUMAL

Akumal proper consists of three areas (Akumal Bay, Half Moon Bay and Yalku Lagoon). The village is about 1.5 miles long and renting a BIKE or a GOLF CART makes visiting your favourite restaurants, grocery stores and moving around much easier.

4 . PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

TAXIS

Taxis are everywhere in Akumal and they are very reliable (but they tend to be a bit pricey). They have a set price but it is wise to ask first what the cost will be. Your rate should be determined before the taxi leaves for your destination. A trip from Akumal to Playa Del Carmen is usually around $30 USD. Taxis run 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

COLECTIVOS

Colectivos are white mini vans (10-14 passengers) that ferry locals and tourists alike from Tulum to Playa Del Carmen and are an inexpensive way to travel. Just stand along Highway 307 and waive or use a flashlight at night to flag them down. When one stops, get in and tell the driver where you want to go and ask the price to your destination. One will usually come by every 10 minutes or so. Akumal to Playa costs approximately $2 US. Collectivos run daily 7:00 AM until 10:00 PM.

BUSES

ADO and Mayab are two good bus companies that service the Yucatan Peninsula.  ADO is the direct service which runs between the main towns and is the fastest and most punctual service.  Mayab runs a slightly cheaper service between major towns and will pick you up and drop you off at any of the local villages or wherever you like along the highway.

There are a few other buses that run up and down Highway 307 from Cancun all the way to Chetumal and additional ones that run throughout the Yucatan. Buses are a good mode of transportation; clean and comfortable, air conditioned, and some have movies. Bus stations are located in Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cancun. Buses run from 7:00AM until 11:00PM. ADO also runs an airport shuttle service from the Playa del Carmen and Tulum bus terminals to the Cancun International Airport. If you choose to use the ADO airport bus, you can take a cab or combi/collectivo to get to the Playa del Carmen or Tulum bus terminal.
