You are here

One big outing. Not three. The families who have the best weeks here choose a single large day, book it properly, and spend the rest within walking distance of their own front door.

Aktun Chen, the one we send families to most

Aktun Chen Park sits a few minutes south of Akumal. The cave is roughly five million years old and the guided walk through it runs about half a mile on an easy path. There is a cenote inside the cave for swimming, ten zip lines in the jungle, and a wildlife area where children see coatis, parrots and spider monkeys. Nobody needs to be a strong swimmer.

Uxuxubi, the one almost nobody knows

A Maya community about seven miles inland from the pueblo down a dirt road, running its own ecological project: hiking, bird watching, a zip line, swimming in Cenote Balam, and a lagoon that is a sanctuary for the Morelet’s crocodile. Older children find this the most memorable thing they do all week, and the money stays in the village. Ask us to arrange it with a guide; this is not a turn-up-and-wander destination.

Or the big parks

Xcaret, Xel-Há and the rest are enormous, all-inclusive and exactly what some six-year-olds want most in the world. They are also a long, loud day.

Leave by nine, home mid afternoon. The heat peaks after two. Dinner should be easy, and Taverna at Plaza Ukana does wood-fired pizza that no exhausted family argues about. Reserve it, since last seating runs between 8:00 and 9:00.

Or just don’t: a morning in the bay and an afternoon in the pool has never once disappointed a child.

We book it: tours and recreational activities.

Make it yours. Tell us who is coming and what you are hoping for, and our team here in Akumal will build the day around it: the right guide, the right hour, the right boat, arranged before you land.
