Fall is Mexico's season of celebration, and the Riviera Maya marks all of it.

It starts September 15, when plazas across the country fill just before 11pm for El Grito, the cry that launched independence in 1810. Bells, fireworks, and a crowd that answers back. Akumal celebrates in the Pueblo, with the whole town out, and almost no visitors know about it.

It ends October 31 through November 2 with Día de Muertos, when families build altars for the people they've lost and the cemeteries fill with marigolds and candlelight. In the Yucatán it's called Hanal Pixán, the food of the souls, and it's one of the most beautiful things you'll ever see.

In between: chiles en nogada on menus all September, the quietest beaches of the year, and the lowest airfare into Cancun of any season.
