Why the Booking Window Opened Early This Year
If you are thinking about Akumal for Christmas, New Year's, or a February escape, this is the post to read before you do anything else. The short version: the planning window has shifted earlier this year, airline capacity into Cancun has been moving in both directions, and the weeks that always go first are already going.
Here is what we are seeing from our side of the booking desk, and what we would do about it.
Travelers are booking three to six months out
Expedia reported a 60 percent increase in searches happening 91 to 180 days before travel during the first quarter of this year. That is not a small shift in behavior. It means the people who will be in Akumal over the holidays started shopping in late summer, not in November.
Count backward from the dates you want:
- Christmas week, December 20 to 27: you are inside the window right now
- New Year's week, December 27 to January 3: inside the window right now
- Presidents' week, mid-February: book by late October
- Spring break, March: book by December
Our own calendar reflects it. The oceanfront homes in Half Moon Bay and South Akumal that sleep eight or more are the first to go every year, and they are going on the same schedule they always do, just against a larger pool of people looking earlier.
Flights: capacity is shifting, so fares are shifting
This summer, U.S. seat capacity into Cancun ran roughly 10 percent below last year, which is part of why the region as a whole saw softer arrivals. Winter is a different story. Carriers have been adding back service, particularly out of secondary U.S. cities:
- Breeze launches twice-weekly Tampa to Cancun service on December 19, 2026
- Frontier has added nonstop Cancun routes from Charlotte, Chicago Midway, and Raleigh-Durham
- Southwest is expanding its Cancun network into the early 2027 schedule, including new service from Pittsburgh
For our guests, the practical takeaway is that fares from mid-size markets are less predictable than they used to be. A route that did not exist last winter can undercut your usual connection by a wide margin, and a route that gets pulled can do the opposite.
What we tell guests to do: set fare alerts on two or three origin airports rather than one. If you are flying from Denver, Houston, Dallas, or Chicago, check the nonstops and the one-stops on the same day. The gap has been unusually wide this year.

Cancun's new terminal is open for the season
Cancun International opened additional terminal capacity ahead of this year's World Cup. If your last arrival involved a long immigration line, the experience this winter should be meaningfully better. Plan on the same buffer for your return flight, though. Departures still fill up fast on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, which is when most of the Riviera Maya turns over.
Our airport transfers are timed to your flight, not to a shuttle schedule, so if your inbound runs late, your driver is still there. That is included with most of our stays and it is one of the more common reasons guests tell us they came back to us instead of booking a listing site.
Why booking direct matters more in a soft year
The Riviera Maya saw visitor numbers dip about 4.5 percent this year. In a softer market, listing platforms lean harder on discounting and dynamic pricing, which sounds good until you are the one paying a service fee on top of a rate that changed twice while you were deciding.
When you book with Akumal Direct, you are booking with the team that manages the home. That means:
- The photos and the description match the property, because we are standing in it
- Rates are the rates, with no platform service fee layered on at checkout
- Concierge, grocery pre-stocking, transfers, and activity booking are handled by people in Akumal
- If something breaks at 9 p.m. on a Sunday, someone local answers
We have written before about the difference between Airbnb, VRBO, and a locally operated rental company. Winter is when that difference is most expensive to learn the hard way.
The move to make this week
- Pick your dates and your backup dates
- Check availability on the homes you want before you shop flights, because homes are scarcer than seats
- Hold the villa, then book the flight
- Tell us what you want to do while you are here and we will build the rest around it
