Booking a beachfront villa in Akumal doesn't mean you need to hire a private chef for every meal. Some of the best moments of a Riviera Maya vacation happen around a simple table: eggs scrambled with tomato, onion and chile in the morning, warm tortillas at lunch, and a platter of sizzling fajitas after a long day in the water.

At several Akumal Direct homes, the same caretakers who live on site and look after the property all year can prepare these home-style meals for you. You get the comfort of eating in, without the price tag of a high-end chef service.
The low-key luxury of a Mexican home-cooked meal
Luxury in Mexico doesn't have to mean a tasting menu. More often it looks like a plate of huevos a la mexicana, eggs scrambled with tomato, onion and chile, served with refried beans, salsa and warm tortillas while the breeze moves through the palms.
The dishes our guests rave about are the classics: chicken fajitas still sizzling on the platter, quesadillas, Mexican-style rice and beans, fresh guacamole and pico de gallo. Many caretakers also make regional favorites like cochinita pibil, chicken in mole and chiles rellenos.
It's simple, generous food, cooked the way families here cook at home. And it tastes even better eaten barefoot on your own terrace.

The people who already know the house
Many Akumal Direct homes have caretakers who look after the property year round, and at several of them the caretakers live right on site. During your stay they keep the house running, and many of them are also wonderful home cooks.
They know the kitchen, the local markets and the house, so a family-style breakfast or dinner for your group comes together without any fuss. Guests mention it again and again. One 2025 guest at Casa Palmeras wrote that the caretakers' dinners were "better than any restaurants we ate at."
It's also easy on the budget. At homes that list a rate, the cook's fee runs about US$5 to US$12 per person per meal, plus groceries, a shopping fee and gratuity. That's a far more accessible way to eat in than booking a high-end private chef for every meal.

A few make it especially easy. Casa del Sol offers breakfast-and-dinner packages for 3, 5 or 7 days. Casa Texana has a weekly plan of two meals a day, Monday to Friday. At Casa Palmeras the caretakers live on the property and need just 24 hours' notice.
Inclusions and rates can change, so our team will confirm the details for your dates when you book.
Save room for Akumal's restaurants
Eating in a few nights leaves plenty of room to explore, and you'll want to. Akumal's beachfront palapas, cafés and local spots are part of the fun, and many are a short walk or golf cart ride from our homes.
- La Lunita, an intimate beachfront spot on Half Moon Bay serving Mexican and regional specialties
- Lol-ha, the open-air palapa bar and restaurant right on Akumal Bay
- Turtle Bay Cafe and Bakery for breakfast, coffee and fresh baked goods
- Imelda's Ecocina in Plaza Ukana, with a Maya dinner buffet on Mondays and Thursdays
- Loncheria Akumalito at the entrance to town, for affordable tortas and local food
- Jungle Cafe, steps from La Lunita and open from 7 AM
A good rhythm: let the caretakers cook after a big day at the cenotes, and save your restaurant nights for sunsets in town. Browse our full Akumal restaurant guide for more.
When a private chef makes sense
For a milestone birthday, an anniversary, a wedding celebration or a multi-course dinner by the sea, a private chef is worth every peso. A chef brings a planned menu, a service team and the polish that turns dinner into an event.
Our guest services team can help you book a private chef for a special occasion. You can also mix and match: let the caretakers handle breakfasts and casual family dinners, then bring in a chef for the night that matters most.
How to arrange meals at your villa
Just let the Akumal Direct team know before you arrive. We'll notify the staff in advance so they can plan with you and shop in time.
- Tell us which meals you'd like. Share the days and meals when you book, or as early as you can before arrival. Some homes need at least 24 hours' notice.
- Share your preferences. Favorite dishes, how spicy you like it, meals for the kids, and any allergies or dietary needs.
- Cover the groceries. The staff do the shopping. Groceries and a small shopping or transport fee are added, often paid in cash.
- Pull up a chair. Enjoy a relaxed, family-style meal without leaving your vacation home.
At some homes, cook service follows the Monday to Saturday housekeeping week, which makes Sunday a perfect night to try a restaurant in town.
